Accelerate Health and Performance: Sifting BS

Last year I worked with a trainer who pushed all his clients to take Pre-Workouts, BCAA’s and Protein – None were body builders or athletes. They were very run of the mill general population clients who all wanted to lose a bit of weight, get a bit fitter, healthier and stronger.

Why did he push them toward supplementation? So he got a discount on all the shortcut bullshit he was doing because he wasn’t actually training or looking after his nutrition properly.

He won’t read this but I’d say it anyway...He was being a bit of a dick.

Not because he wanted to make a profit and not because he recommended supplements to his clients, but because he never really assessed or met their needs and never yielded tangible results. His clients generally liked him so they stayed a while but they often got jack of not getting the results they wanted and he didn’t stretch himself further to find out why.

You see, as a Personal Trainer, over time you develop a great bullshit detector. You also talk to a lot of different people and learn a lot about those people - Their heritage, their culture, their personality traits, their habits...whether they’re a folder or a scruncher.

But this guy didn’t talk to his clients and engage them...he never learned about them as people and never retained the knowledge that would join the dots and shed some light on the people he would meet in months and years to come.

One of his clients was a big English bloke. I’d estimate 120-140kg and 50% body fat plus...and he had him knocking back pre, intra and post workout amino acids at 5:30am.

Mitch: “Why have you got him on so many aminos? He isn’t lifting that much weight and that’s a lot of calories to take in before he even gets to breakfast.”
Trainer: “Nah, there’s no calories in aminos. The label says so.”

Dear oh, dear oh, dear.

Amino Acids make up protein molecules...1g of Protein yields four calories of energy...but what makes up protein molecules has no energy?

Layne Norton explains it very well here: https://www.biolayne.com/coaching/faq/part-e-bcaa/

So clearly there were some holes in this guy’s education. He was young and naive, and credit where credit is due, he took that on the chin and accepted the knowledge.

What else was there about that one client though that really, really stood out straight away, for me? He was English. A Pom. He was from the Mother Country, Guv’nah... And what do we know about the English diet? It’s pretty horrible.

* This actually looks delicious even if it gives me seven simultaneous heart attacks

Chips with every meal, even breakfast cereal. Sweet drinks on the regular. Highly processed bullshit as far as the eye can see. And I can say this...I married a pom.
When I met my wife her diet was shiiiit. My diet is by no means perfect but with a few simple changes my wife lost over 10kg in six months with a little bit of exercise and a shitload less Yorkshire Puddings.

Now I admit, I never actually analysed this guy’s diet but I’m willing to put a pineapple on it being pretty whack – a significant calorie surplus, a large amount of deep fried food and whole lot of processed sugar. That, plus a shit ton of calorie filled supplements...he didn’t lose weight. He gained weight. Fast.

When there’s no interaction and no engagement there is no bullshit detector. No little voice in the back of your head saying “This bloke isn’t telling pork pies, he is eating them!” and that is a HUGE pitfall for new, inexperienced trainers. Most trainers won’t become older, experienced trainers without this ability.

But it’s not just up to us...sure, you pay us to help you achieve your goals but we aren’t magicians. You see us maybe three or four hours per week tops...what are you doing in the other 160+ hours?
Are you actually eating really well or have you had salads with your Big Mac instead of fries? Are you really doing your hill sprints or are you doing a hill sprint and then taking selfies? #fitspo
Before you even try your bullshit with your trainer, be your own bullshit filter. Be your own bullshit filter every day!

Are you training as hard as you need to or as hard as you’re supposed to be? Are you keeping your macros and calories in check or are you mismeasuring to allow yourself some extra Ben & Jerry’s? Did you really eat pretty well this week or did the bottle of vodka, late night kebab and Large Popcorn Chicken Meal kind of fuck that up?

Trust me, the first answer that comes to mind is ALWAYS the right one and if it is second guessing yourself the answer to the questions above is “no”.

Not every has to be bodybuilder strict. The successful ones are disciplined as hell. Those guys and girls are freaks. But if you can become a lot more honest with yourself and a lot more honest with your trainer your results will go through the roof in a matter of weeks.

Trainers: Get to know your clients in detail. They may up and leave one day but you will be so much more prepared for the next one that comes along. Sift their bullshit!
Trainees: Sift your bullshit. Cut your bullshit. Be real with yourself and be real with your trainer. If you need someone to be your bullshit filter call me. I’ve got many bullshit filters that tell me to shut the fuck up constantly. It’s great – It helps – It is important.

Life is way easier and way more fun when we keep it real and own our choices and actions.

Paul's Body Engineering: The Growth of Online Coaching

The latest trend sweeping the globe in the Health and fitness Industry is the mass growth of online fitness coaching.

Often you will see advertisements across social media for online coaching packages and transformation challenges. But what do you really get without face to face contact?

Well having made myself available as an online coach, I can attest there is a great amount of benefit too it.

If you are time poor, work away, don't have a gym membership or don't want one, are just some of the markets that can be attracted to this style of coaching.

It is also generally cheaper than face to face and the good online coaches will be available online at the drop of a hat to answer your questions or provide feedback on your progress.

Obviously to this upside there is a downside with many taking advantage of this movement in coaching and offering substandard advice and training.

As a coach and recognised PT, my advice would be to do your research.
Check their website, social media platforms and reviews. Ensure they are insured and registered and are who they say they are.

Another way is to view their results. If it is weight loss you are after, ask to see previous clients results. If it is bodybuilding or size you are chasing, request photos of previous clients. The greatest marketing tool an online coach has is photos.
A good online coach will have before and after photos of all their clients (with their permission of course) to be used down the track to prove their worth.
Bad advice, in person or not, can have long lasting negative effects to your health and fitness so choosing the right trainer or coach is an important decision.

There is a lot out there now, and its not just locally based. you can source well renowned coaches from all over the world.
In my opinion, face to face is a much more rewarding and satisfying experience and will get you your results sooner, however if you do fall into one of the categories listed above then online coaching and still being accountable to someone may in fact do you the world of good.

Final tips when seeking out an online coach.

1. Check their website

2. Check there social media pages and reviews

3. Ensure they are insured and registered

4. Source result photos

They can promise everything under the sun but when its time to deliver, fall well short of these promises so be confident in the decision you make.

Accelerate Health and Performance: You Put Your Left Foot In, You Put Your Left Foot Out... Wait... Where The Hell Do I Put My Feet For A Squat?

Personal Trainer 101 makes a lot of absolute statements regarding posture and technique for exercise. Some of it is true, some of it is somewhat true and some of it is straight up bullshit.

Yeah, I went through TAFE to get my Fitness qualifications with two of the teachers who wrote the Cert 3, Cert 4 and Diploma of Fitness curriculums. It got me into the industry. And then I started reading more and more and realised that what they taught me was enough to be a relatively safe trainer that was unlikely to kill someone (that should be on my resumé right!?)...that was about it. There was a lot of stuff in that course I soon learnt was pretty out of date or ineffective.

Basically, Personal Trainer 101 started looking about as effective as another one of my favourite books from childhood when it came to my work.

http://media2.picsearch.com/is?04NNjQTZQx-BFnPkGfQ6FZVNFlobkpP351RxDrLn2B8&height=252

So what are you trying to say Mitch?
For all the trainers/coaches out there, do not make the mistake of being rigid in your teaching or your learning. You will have teaching cues that work every time and then out of nowhere you will try the same cue with a new client and they will look at you like you are speaking a foreign language. It's up to you to adjust and find the right words to get through to them. If you learn from a wide range of quality sources you'll teach accordingly.

Your clients are a bit like Lemmings. They each have individual skills and individual weakness. It's up to you to click the right buttons for them all to make it safely through the cave. Sure, some will get incinerated, that's the nature of the industry. But, if you help more than you brutally kill your job satisfaction and career longevity are going to be pretty solid.

http://media1.picsearch.com/is?EK-JOIAjPbn71aPaN8MA5FM612ZSbRGvAhT3fSAEAu4&height=233

For those of you who are in the gym or out on the pavement doing it yourself, don't expect anything of yourself based on what those around you can do. You will progress at your own rate and you may well need to do things differently to achieve your goals. You will have your own techniques, strengths and weaknesses that you will learn and work through at your own pace...and if you need help hire a personal trainer, I recommend me. Just saying.

Alright Mitch, we get your point. Now how do we address it?

First of all, remember that we are all unique little snowflakes. We have our own set of needs and should be treated accordingly. The fact of the matter is that every person moves differently and responds to stimuli differently. In essence, this is why online "bikini body guru" (read: failed model with a large Instagram following of guys who are simply there to see tits and arse) programs fall short, both ethically and practically (But I will rant on that another time).
https://s-media-cache-ak0.pinimg.com/736x/90/35/f3/9035f3f6ff11f3de1736a225001a2ea9.jpg

Secondly, when it comes to how to do something in the gym, stop dealing in absolutes. Sure, having your feet hip width apart is a solid starting point but the second that squat shows something that you want to correct or feels like it's not quite right then it is wrong and needs adjusting. Way more than half the people I see need their feet in a different position to accommodate their bodies individuality. Just because the text book says to do it one way does not mean the text book is correct...it was written for the average not the individual.

Thirdly, always chase perfection. One of the biggest things I got from the two hours I got to spend listening to Tony Gentilcore (if you don't know who Tony Gentilcore is my advice is to find out A-SAP!) speak last year was this - "If it's nearly right, it is still wrong."

Never settle for 'good enough'.

As a coach/trainer you should always be wanting your clients to improve. Skills are dynamic and they will diminish if they are under-utilised or under-developed. If you're training on your own this is equally important for you, if not more so. Here's a hot tip...video your sets. Sure, you look like a bit of a knob to the meathead who secretly (read: it's so friggin' obvious) sneaks (read: "Oi dickhead! We all know what you're going to do!") off to take photos of himself in the bathroom mirror between bicep sets. But to anyone with half a clue, you're switched on and care about your performance and success. Respect to you brother/sister.

http://s.mlkshk.com/r/1ORY

Trainer/Coaches: You can't fit a square peg into a round hole the same we you can't make a 7 foot beast bench press the same way as a 5 foot pocket rocket. Always have your next step in mind. A variation, an adjustment, a cue. Whatever it is you need to help your client get what they want. This takes time, research and practice...Ultimately, that's how you're going to make sure that they stay your client.

Solo Legends: If you're a square peg you can't fit into that round hole. If you're a 7 foot beast you're not likely to train the same way as a 5 foot pocket rocket. Do your research or invest in some professional help. A good PT on a gym floor is always willing to give some advice (I say good because if they're not willing they're probably a jerk and not very good). That said don't expect a complete program overhaul between clients and a trip to the loo. If you want a lot of help pay for a lot of help...we're worth it!

Lift Academy/Glamafit: Macros Made Easy

There is a pretty good chance you have heard of "macros" or the term IIFYM (if it fits your macros). But most people are left wondering "what on earth is a macro"?

Macro's or macronutrients are those that we need in large amounts. The three macronutrients that humans need are fats, protein & carbohydrates. Each of these provide energy to the body in the form of calories. The calorie break-down for these macronutrients are not all the same.

1gm of carbohydrate equals 4 calories. 1gm of Protein equals 4 calories & 1gm of fat equals 9 calories. (Ohhh and for those who don't mind a drop, alcohol is 7 calories per gram).

Calculating macronutrients will vary greatly from person to person & what their goals are. For example a person consuming 2000 calories per day & has a macronutrient breakdown of 45% carbs 30% protein & 25% fat. This would mean they would consume 225gm carbs for the day, 150gm protein & 55gm of fat.

So why do we need carbohydrates, protein and fats?

Carbohydrates are the bodies main source of fuel as they are easily used by the body for energy. All of the tissues & cells in our body can use glucose for energy. Carbohydrates are needed for the central nervous system, the kidneys, the brain & muscles (including the heart) to function properly. They can be stored in the muscles & liver & later used for energy. Carbs are mainly found in starchy foods like grains & potatoes, fruit, milk & yoghurt. Other foods like vegetables, nuts, seeds & cottage cheese contain carbs but in lesser amounts.

Fibre are a certain type of carbohydrates that our body can not digest. These carbohydrates pass through the intestinal tract intact & help to remove the waste out of the body. Foods high in fibre include fruit, vegetables & whole grain products.

Protein is found in meats, poultry, fish, meat substitutes, cheese, milk, nuts, legumes & in smaller quantities in starchy foods & vegetables. We need protein for growth - especially important for children, teens & pregnant women. For tissue repair, immune function, making essential hormones & enzymes, energy when carbs aren't available & for preserving lean muscle mass.

And finally fat! Fats have had a bad rap over the years for causing weight gain, but some fat is actually essential for survival! Generally speaking 20-35% of calories should come from fats. But good fats like coconut oil, olive oil, avocado, salmon, nuts, organic butter, poultry & milk products. We need fats for normal growth & development, energy, absorbing certain vitamins, provide cushioning for the organs & maintaining cell membranes.

Sound nutritional planning involves a mix of all three of these macronutrients. This method of can prove to be a really effective way of measuring food intake to reach health and fitness goals. For custom guidance with calculating macros in order to lose weight contact Nicole on 0431421202

Accelerate Health and Performance: Re-Evaluating The Cost of a Personal Trainer

I've been a Personal Trainer for six years now and there is one thing that definitely hasn't changed in that time. "I can't afford it" is still by far the most common reason people give as to why they cannot have a PT. Sometimes this is absolutely the case. Sometimes this is just an excuse or a misunderstanding of the truth. I don't mean that as a sarcastic way of saying it's a lie. I mean it is a misunderstanding of the truth. Keep reading...you'll see!

Personal Trainer's can be expensive, especially if you only look at the cost. But if you look at everything you stand to gain it starts to become quite cheap and extremely good value! It's almost like shares....but better! Keep reading....you'll see!

A couple of months ago I posted a question on my Facebook page just to gauge the thoughts and feelings of people about what is holding them back from their health and fitness goals...the response was FAR more than I expected. I learned HEAPS and it has given me a multitude of ideas that I hope to put into action soon.

So throughout the discussions we were having a girl said the following...
"Every gym is intimidating, no trainer wants to help if you aren't paying them to specifically train you, it's awful, I thought men and women worked at gyms to help people like us who don't know what to do, instead we have to pay even more money to get that.. It's kind of ironic."

In part this pissed me off and in part this just made me sad and frustrated with the Fitness Industry. Gyms can be intimidating. I completely admit that. I don't always feel comfortable in gyms myself. Even the one I work in. To say that absolutely all gyms are intimidating and that gyms are intimidating at all times is just not the case. Not only is it subjective but to a certain extent you've got to cop it on the chin a bit and accept that the gym isn't always going to be your favourite place to be but it's where you want to be or may need to be. I'm not the biggest or the strongest but I have shit I want to do...complaining isn't going to get it done. I suck it up, work hard and move forward. For me, it's worth it.

That comment was posted at about 3:00pm...at 3:30pm I was helping a gym member through a leg session. He is an apprentice electrician. He can't afford Personal Training but he is in the gym most days working hard and trying to reach his goals. He is a good guy who wants to work hard. I offered to help him. He didn't ask. At the end of the session he shook my hand and said thanks and that was it. Three months later we still train legs together every Wednesday...

"no trainer wants to help if you aren't paying them to specifically train you, it's awful, I thought men and woman worked at gyms to help people like us who don't know what to do" - BULLSHIT. This bit just pissed me off. I am not the exception to the rule. I am one of many. Yes there are arseholes in the industry. There are arseholes in every industry. No, we aren't all arseholes. Please don't paint us all with one brush.

"instead we have to pay even more money to get that.. It's kind of ironic." ...This bit pissed me off too.
Gyms actually don't make a huge amount of money once all the overheads are covered. How much do you think a gym membership would cost if gyms started paying their PT's a wage? Some gym do run this way. Those gyms are small and few and far between and for good reason.

Do snacks come complimentary with your movie ticket? Didn't think so.
Yes, you do have to pay extra for a Personal Trainer. I've known this girl for a while and I trained two of her Aunties and her cousin for years. She's a very nice girl and I have a lot of time for her. Her opinion is valid, as everyone's is, but I think it's a little misguided. Like I said...it kind of pissed me off at first...but then it got me thinking further which was the whole point of the exercise in the first place...

Why do people think that Personal Training is just a cost and not an investment?

Most PT marketing and sales articles will tell you that Personal Training is a "numbers game" and that you have to talk to everyone and try to sell to everyone...I HATE THAT SHIT and I hate that people have the perception that all Personal Trainers are like that. Some are...I can't deny that...but I am not.

Money is without a doubt the number one reason people give when asked why they would not be able to engage in Personal Training. And it is often a valid reason. Money doesn't grow on trees...trust me...I've tried!

http://media3.picsearch.com/is?Wog9V7y6FUsc0VaW6euoffL2sCkE2iwS1otLI4V3vVs&height=220

But is it really not worth the sacrifices? If there was some way that you could make it work wouldn't you want to give it a red hot go?

Standard dialogue with a Personal Training enquiry...
Enquirer: "I really want to lose some weight because I'm not happy with my body and I want to get a bit fitter and healthier because I'm always really tired and I get sick all the time and I'd like to get a bit stronger because I'd like to be able to do a push up and one day a chin up. Do you think that's possible?"
Personal Trainer: "Absolutely. They're really good goals. If you train hard and smart you will be able to get there. I'd be happy to help you!"
E: "Ok, cool! I was thinking of doing two sessions per week to start and then maybe adding a third session when I'm fitter. How much would that cost?"
PT: "Two sessions per week will cost you 'x' dollars."
E: "Oh...I can only afford 'y' dollars. I'll have to think about it and get back to you."

They don't get back to you unless you follow it up. I've had that conversation 4,000,000 times.
Let's break it down...Let's jam!

11140107_762409970525053_5673087392304433307_n
* Having a jam with my sister circa 1989 - Rain hat & truck PJ's #fashionable *

The client wants to lose weight, be healthier, be fitter and be stronger...
Short list, right? Not quite...
What comes with achieving all those goals listed?

Losing weight will breed self-confidence which will flow through the rest of your world and lead to huge gains in the work place, in your home life and even in your love life. More confidence means you're more outgoing at work and more likely to gain more shifts or even gain promotion. All of a sudden you could be financially better off quite directly from engaging in Personal Training!
Being happier in your work life will make you happier at home...more money, less stress will always make for a better home and social life. That needs no explanation. And as for romance...bom chicka wow wow! If you're looking better and feeling better about yourself and how you look you're more likely to attract a lady/man friend. Again...I don't need to explain how that works out well for you...bom chicka wow wow!

So all of a sudden you're making more money, having more fun and getting more sex?

images

But what about the health benefits?
This one is EASY...
Being healthier means less days off work, less days wasted in bed, less trips to the doctor, less trips to the chemist.
"But Mitch...being healthier is only giving me less of stuff!?"
With all of the above comes more time at work which means making more money which means more money to do fun stuff and because you're less sick you can indeed do more fun stuff!
#signmeup

"But Mitch...will I be fitter and stronger?"
BLOODY OATH!...AND that will make all the cool stuff above even more fun because you will be able to do funner stuff and more of it!

Rather than looking at how much a trainer will cost you, look at what you can get out of it. Look at the things that you will cut out of your life in order to maximise the positive effect of your training. Look at how happy and satisfied you will be when you reach your goals. Look at how much that will improve your life. Now put a price tag on how good all that good stuff will feel...How much is it worth now???

And that's just one simple example off the top of my head...give me any scenario and I am confident that I can explain how and why investing in your health with a good Personal Trainer can help. Not just me either...if you're anywhere in Australia I can refer to someone I would trust to train you in about ten minutes flat.

Yes, Personal Training can be (I prefer "seem to be") expensive. It can be a luxury that you simply can't afford. I can't deny that. Personal Training can also be PRICELESS. With a good trainer Personal Training can be far more than just coughing up dough at the end of a session and sore legs the next day. It can be a new lease of life, new friendships and new perspectives on the world that you simply cannot buy.

Talk to a trainer and talk about their product and how it can help you. You might find it's far less costly than you think...you might also find that it's the other stuff in your life that you can no longer afford.

Leave a comment...share it...like it...whatever you need to do. As always please refer all complaints and hate mail to the admin of this page.
